Throughout October, Morgan recognized Careers in Construction Month by sharing the experiences of employees working in different areas of the construction industry.

We spoke with Nathan, a Field Recruiter in our Edmonton office; Justin, an Equipment Operator working in the Fort McMurray region; and Sebastien, a Superintendent leading a project in the region. Each came to construction differently, and each has built a different career within the industry. Together, their experiences highlighted something important: there is no single way to get started in construction, and where you begin doesn't have to be where you end up.

Different Ways to Get Started

For Justin, getting into construction was about looking for a change of pace and the opportunity to try something different. As an Equipment Operator, that decision has given him an environment where he can continue learning, challenge himself on different pieces of equipment and improve his skills.

“What I enjoy about working for Morgan is the ability to learn and push your skills with people to back you up.” – Justin, Morgan Equipment Operator

Sebastien's interest started much earlier. Fascinated by heavy equipment and anything with an engine growing up, he got his first opportunity in construction approximately 20 years ago as a labourer on a large remediation project at the Kam Kotia Mine in Timmins, Ontario.

From there, his career took him through fuel and lube, surveying and rock truck operation before moving into dozers and excavators and, eventually, leadership. Each role added another layer of experience and gave him a better understanding of what it takes for a crew to work successfully together.

“What I enjoy most about being a Superintendent is seeing all the hard work come together and watching other people succeed ... At the end of the day, success isn’t about one person—it comes from everyone working together, helping each other out, and pulling in the same direction." – Sebastien, Morgan Superintendent

Nathan offers a different perspective on careers in construction. As a Field Recruiter, he works with candidates looking to take their first step into the industry as well as experienced workers looking for their next opportunity. For him, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing someone who is eager for an opportunity get the chance to prove themselves and ultimately become part of a Morgan crew.

“We move a lot of dirt, so we need people to help us do that.” Nathan, Field Recruiter

Thinking About a Career in Construction?

Nathan also shared some practical advice for anyone interested in taking their first or next step with Morgan.

Start with a clear, concise resume. Clearly identify your safety tickets, where and when you've worked and, for operators, the types and sizes of equipment you have experience running. Labourers can help their application stand out by describing what they actually did day to day rather than simply listing general labour experience.

Different Paths. One Industry.

There is no single path to building a career in construction. Experience gained in one role can open the door to new skills, new responsibilities and different opportunities along the way. Justin, Sebastien and Nathan each shared a different perspective on what a career in the industry can look like.

Their experiences also shared a common thread: working hard, learning from the people around you and being open to opportunity can turn a starting point into a career. That career might begin with an interest in heavy equipment, a first opportunity in the field or simply the decision to try something different.
